The most useful way to start English from zero as an adult is to begin with sentences you will really use in your own life and to study for a short time several times a week. Adults have an advantage: they know why they are learning and can plan their own study, and a clear goal helps them use it.
First, write your goal in one sentence
“Learning English” is a very broad goal. Instead, write a sentence such as “Explain what I need at a hotel and a restaurant on holiday” or “Introduce myself briefly at work”. This sentence decides which words and phrases you learn first and makes progress easier to see.

Three things are enough for the first month: phrases for introducing yourself and greeting people, numbers and the time, and phrases for asking for something and saying you didn't understand (“Could you say that again, please?”). Learning these as whole sentences, instead of memorising grammar rules one by one, lets you start speaking sooner.
A realistic weekly routine
Set aside 15–20 minutes a day, four or five days a week. One day learn new sentences, the next day repeat them aloud, another day listen to a short recording, and one day write your own sentences. If you miss a day, don't double the time to make up for it; just carry on with the routine.
Mistakes are part of the process
Many adults put off speaking because they worry about getting it wrong. But mistakes are expected from a beginner, and the other person is usually focused on understanding you. Make your goal being understood, not perfect sentences; accuracy comes with practice.

Frequently asked questions
Is it too late to learn English as an adult?
No. Adults know their goals and can plan their study; with regular practice, progress is possible at any age.
Should I start with grammar or with sentences?
Starting with everyday sentences gets you speaking sooner. Grammar then helps you understand why they are built that way.
