In English, “a” and “an” are used when you mention something for the first time or mean “any one”; “the” is used for something both the speaker and the listener can identify. The choice between “a” and “an” depends on the first sound of the next word, not its spelling.

## “A” or “an”?

Use “a” before a consonant sound and “an” before a vowel sound: a book, a cat; an apple, an egg. Because the rule follows sound, “an hour” (silent h) and “a university” (it starts with a “yu” sound) are both correct.

## When do you use “the”?

When you mention something a second time: “I saw a dog. The dog was very big.” For things there is only one of: the sun, the moon. When the situation makes it clear which one: “Can you close the door?” (the door of the room you are in).

## When there is no article

No article is used when you talk about plural or uncountable things in general: “I like cats.”, “Water is important.” Meal names and most languages and country names usually have no article either: “We have breakfast at eight.”, “She speaks Turkish.”, “I live in Turkey.”

## Common mistakes for Turkish speakers

Turkish has no articles, so the most common mistake is leaving out the article before a singular countable noun: not “I have car” but “I have a car”. The second is adding “the” when talking about something in general: not “The life is beautiful” but “Life is beautiful”.

## A short exercise

Write five things you saw today, starting with “I saw a…”. Then add a second sentence for each one, this time using “the”: “I saw a bird. The bird was blue.” This two-step pattern is an easy way to feel the difference between the two articles.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why is it “a university”, not “an university”?

Because the rule follows sound, not spelling; “university” starts with a “yu” sound, which is a consonant sound.

### Do country names never take “the”?

Most don't, but a few do: “the United Kingdom”, “the United States”, “the Netherlands”.
